Video poker strategy charts are designed to help you make the best play on every hand. When you make the best play it gives you the best chance to win while keeping the house edge as low as possible.

Once you learn how to read video poker strategy charts it’s easy to use them. Most are written in a format where the best hands are at the top and the worst ones are at the bottom. You look at your hand and start reading down the chart until you find a hand that matches what you hold.

You can find a sample strategy chart in the next section. It’s a little more detailed than most charts you find, but it’s important for you to understand what each line means.

Most video poker strategy charts just list what you should hold and don’t specifically say hold these cards. If you use a chart that just lists the hands, it means you hold what’s listed and discard everything else.

  • One of the most important things you should differentiate in order to be able to utilize a strategy chart is an Open Straight/ Open Straight Flush from an Inside Straight/ Inside Straight Flush. In the context of the game, “open” comes from an “open-ended draw” which forms a very strong hand in poker.
  • The PokerStrategy.com Starting Hands Chart shows you which hands you should play and how you should play them to get started. Simply print it out and you will always know what to do throughout the entire game. Because each game type varies significantly.

The first strategy chart will outline the strategy for full pay (9/6) machines and 8/5 machines. If you want to take your video poker more seriously you can research correct strategy for any pay table or variation you come across. That being said, you’ll do pretty well on any Jacks or Better machine using this strategy.
